Welcome to my Battle Brothers Review! This is one of my 2017 surprises! One month from the launch I managed to log 66 hours on it and I’m eagerly awaiting the 1.1 update that will improve the game even more.
Battle Brothers is a turn-based tactical RPG where you lead a company of mercenaries in a randomized world.
Usually I don’t like Turn-Based Combat Games because you do a lot of waiting. You wait, to move, you wait, you move, you finally get to take a shot… you miss… then you wait, etc. I never knew exactly why. I also coudn’t explain myself on why I like Battle Brothers so much even that the main focus of the game (the combat) is also turn-based. Until it hit me!
It’s because of the animations! In those kind of Turn Based games where there are multiple “opponents” moving units, you do a lot of waiting, you see a lot of animations, you see the shot which is a miss or a hit… then you wait some more! I finally noticed this during an on-going fight between the Militia and some Bandits. I decided to join in the battle so I can get my hands in some loot. However, when you join in an on-going battle you don’t start with your army in formation, you usually join in from the sides (top/bottom) and you will do a lot of walking & end turn while you approach the enemy. Basically you don’t really do much. This is when it hit me why I don’t like those games! Good thing is that in Battle Brother those problems are to a minimum.
So what I like about Battle Brothers?
